This Month’s Small-Brush Calligraphy Class

Although the days are still hot, I’ve started to notice more and more moments when the air feels a little calmer, as if the season is slowly shifting.
Last week, we held the final session of our spring–summer small-brush calligraphy course.

For this session, everyone practiced writing autumn-themed haiku and seasonal words. Even those joining for the very first time discovered a new kind of enjoyment, different from regular kanji practice. With the teacher’s advice, they created beautiful tanzaku (poem cards) with such free and lively brushstrokes that you wouldn’t believe it was their very first try^^

Those who have been attending regularly for over a year now show lines that are noticeably more refined. It reminds me how powerful steady practice can be, even just once a month. As the barrier to picking up a small brush lowers, I hope it will naturally become a part of everyday life for many.
Although small-brush calligraphy is often thought of as “difficult,” some first-timers this time happily said, “It was easier than I expected!”

Our autumn–winter course will begin next month. I’m delighted that many will continue their journey with us, and even more so that our community keeps growing with new friends♪
